What is Obstetrics and Gynecology?
Obstetrics and gynecology (often abbreviated OB/GYN) are the two specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs. This combined training prepares the physician to provide care for both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.
To become an OB/GYN specialist requires four years of education at an accredited college or university, followed by another four years of medical school and an additional four years of residency.
Who should see a Gynecologist?
It is recommended that teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 15 begin seeing an gynecologist. The first visit allows a young girl to become better informed about her body and the choices she makes. Early screening allows the physician to monitor any changes in the body before they become serious.
Fact: The greatest single reason for cervical cancer is not having Pap smears according to guidelines.
If you are experiencing any of the following it is best to be seen by a physician:
- Pelvic Pain
- Abnormal Bleeding
- Bleeding between periods
- Unusual Vaginal Discharge
- Unusual pain, swelling or itching
These symptoms could be indications of a vaginal infection or STD, which can affect your future fertility. They may also indicate other diseases, such as, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or other reproductive problems.
When to see an Obstetrician
Early prenatal care is very important. Women should schedule an appointment as soon as pregnancy is confirmed.
