Athletic Training

Putnam County Hospital is proud to sponsor the Sports Medicine Department for two of the local High Schools through Rehabilitation Services. This relatively new department was developed to meet the Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT) requirements for these secondary schools’ athletes. The LAT is onsite at the designated school four to six days per week, four to twelve hours per day depending upon the needs of the sport season.

The advantage of having the LAT associated with the Putnam County Hospital is rapid access to medical services either emergent or more routine. For those students’ injuries requiring treatment beyond the scope of care the LAT can provide, the Occupational and Physical Therapy Services are a phone call away. Dialogue among the LAT, PT, and OT staff members helps ensure the most appropriate level of care for the student athlete.

Athletic trainers serve as a vital link between the student athlete and medical care, between the athlete and coaching staff, and between the athlete and family members or caregivers. Trained to quickly assess on-field or on-court injuries, the LAT must make return-to-sport decisions to have the athlete continue play, receive first aid, supportive bracing, or withdraw from the activity. Accurate information and communication are essential to coordinate the varying levels of training services, keep the coaching staff apprised of an athlete’s injury status and keep the athlete’s family or caregiver informed of injury rehabilitation or need for further medical care.
