  • To diagnose the severity of sleep apnea, such as mild, moderate, severe

What Is a CPAP Sleep Study?

  • It determines what type of mask may work best for you.

What is an MSLT Sleep Study?

  • An MSLT is a daytime sleep test
  • It helps to diagnose narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, and other types of excessive daytime sleepiness

The Following Will Be Recorded:

  • Brainwave activity via electro encephalogram to determine sleep types (i.e. REM and non-REM) and sleep stages (superficial and deep)
  • Eye movement via electro occulogram
  • Heart rate and rhythm via electro cardiogram
  • Muscle activity and limb movements via electro myograms

  • Airflow from nose or mouth via thermister and pressure transducer

How To Prepare?

We try to provide a comfortable, home-like environment for sleep testing. You may feel more comfortable bringing a few things from home, such as:

  • Your home medications
  • A book or magazine to read
  • Comfortable night clothing

**Please avoid using sticky hair products as it may interfere with the sleep test.  Please also try to avoid the use of caffeine and alcohol after noon on the day of the study.  Avoid napping the day of the study, if possible.

What To Expect:

After arriving at the sleep center, the technician will take you to your private comfortable room, which is designed like a normal bedroom. You will have time to change into your comfortable night clothing and place your belongings in the cabinets. Subsequently, you will be taken to the prep room where several different electrodes will be placed on your body to monitor your sleep. Typically, it takes twenty to thirty minutes for the setup process. After that you will return to your room and relax until you fall asleep. You may read a book or watch TV. You will be able to communicate with your technician at any time via the sensitive microphone. Your sleep will be monitored very closely for the entire night by the technician from an outside computer terminal. You may use the restroom if needed. In the morning, all the electrodes will be removed from your body.

When Will I Know the Results?

The sleep disorders specialist will review the entire data with the help of a computer and prepare his detailed report. This will be sent to your physician or will be communicated to you. Typically it takes a few days for you to receive the report as the study consists of approximately 1000 pages of data that must be reviewed carefully.

Please do not forget to pick up our patient education and information brochures on a variety of sleep-related subjects.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any way.
